    O you who stung the heart with the scorpion of your temple-locks,

    If the lovesick lover could seek healing charms, he would seek them.

    He has been bereft of patience since passion took hold of him,

    Yet there he kept the vows of love.

    O you who turn away from love’s union out of arrogance,

    Through it, he remains elevated above the lovers.

    If I am not worthy of what I wish for, then give generously,

    And listen—may you be safe—to what has been said:

    فما يضيع جميل أينما وضعا

    The kind deed was wasted, even if bestowed in the wrong place;

    For no kind deed is wasted, wherever it is bestowed.
