It kisses the ground, acknowledging the kindness bestowed—

a servant’s letter, arriving with due courtesy.

    It offers greetings to the one absent from my sight;

yet from my heart, by God, he has not been absent.

O Yusuf, your lovesick admirer has indeed resembled Yaqub,

pouring out sorrow with a heart dejected over you.

My longing for you and my distance from you—between them

the heart grew bewildered: it neither stood firm nor leapt.

My heart and my eye—because of their states, my endurance

lies between one melting to nothing and one pouring forth.

And all this, if it pleases you, O my hope—

may God never deprive my desire of the sweetness of reunion.
