بعدماafter قدalready قمّطونيthey swaddled me
How often they tied me up in the bed,
On the bed how they tied me
After they had swaddled me!
After they had stripped me
وبراسختand with rasakht pigment ونيليand indigo-blue dye
وخضابand dye قدalready خططونيthey drew lines on me
And with rasakht and indigo,
With rope and palm leaves
And dye, they drew lines on me.
And henna they had painted me
ياO حزينكمyour sorrowful one ياO بختيmy luck

كنتI used to حينwhen أرقدI lie down بتختيin my bed
Oh, your poor wretch! Oh, my luck!
Oh how miserable you are, my luck
Whenever I lay down in my bed,
When I used to sleep in my bed
لاnot أزالI cease أرشرشI sprinkle تحتيbeneath me
وأبكيand I cry نيnee! (crying sound) نيnee! (crying sound) نيnee! (crying sound)
I kept sprinkling beneath me,
I still rustle beneath me
Ay! And I cried, “Nee, nee, nee!”
Oh how I weep nee nee nee
لوif طلبتI asked for أناI رضاعهbreastfeeding
وعملتand I made ذيthis الدلاعهchildish fuss
If I asked to be nursed,
If I had asked for suckling
And made this childish fuss,
And acted like a pampered one
ذاthat الزمانtime كانتit was سقاعهimpudence; literally, coldness
وعليand upon me وضرّبونيand they beat me
Back then, that was considered impudence,
This time would have been disgraceful
And they set upon me and beat me.
And they would have beaten me
