He wronged me and made my tears flow as a river—

a gazelle who rebukes my tears whenever he takes them for a supplicant.

And if you fulfilled my desire in love through union with me,

then hardship, past and newly arisen, would be easy to bear.

My heart grew weak in love at his refusal, and yearned

for a lithe, swaying beloved who keeps the heart in pain.

No sooner did he appear and begin singing to a string

than he captured souls that listened to him and watched.

I called out, with tears already streaming from my eyes:

O heart's desire, what has happened is enough for me—enough!

My heart has fallen into peril through my longing,

since your swaying figure wore it down as it passed.

The arrows of your eyelid—what have I to do with them in love?

They have left me infatuated with them, having captured my mind.

I think, should they strike me down, my night will have no dawn.

Alas! Has their deadly assault bewitched the night?

    Love for you has left me neither soul nor gold;

and if you are pleased, all that is lost is easy to bear.

So that is sweet in my homeland and on my travels,

O you who surpass the full moon in beauty whenever it unveils itself!
