Has your face shone forth, or is this the full moon in darkness,

Or a lightning flash, or the pearls of your mouth in a row?

O you who wound the heart with volleys of glances—indeed,

You have sorely wounded it with your slender, graceful figure.

With your figure and cheek you wounded the lovestruck, or

With speech and glance, or with skill and eyes.

May my Lord guard you—how radiant a mortal you are!

In beauty you surpass the full moons on the horizon.

The moons hide behind clouds out of shame

When you appear, and the boughs hide behind their leaves.

You were singled out for beauty and kindness, rising

To the pinnacle of rank, in form and in character.

So the jewels of speech, strung as verse or scattered as prose,

Were fit for nothing but your praise, O man of merit.

And in describing your wondrous qualities, if

I tried to count them in words, I could not.

Your eyelid's droops have lifted away the lovesick one's sleep,

When you resolved to consign the eye to sleeplessness.

If, from your waist's delicacy or your form's suppleness,

You had taught your heart tenderness, I would not have spent the evening anxious.

You have chained my unrestrained tears in love for you, and from

The bonds of your captivity my heart is not released.

I warned my heart, when your glance beguiled it, of

The nature of passion; yet it neither turned back nor came to its senses.

May my soul be your ransom, you who have tormented me in love.

Is that lawful? Yes, in what has passed and what remains.

Ah, how lovely, coming from you, is whatever pleases you, O my hope!

I have tasted nothing sweeter than that—may God guard you.

I complain of no pain from anything short of your abandonment,

Nor do I fear it throughout all my days.

May separation's hand perish; separation has become Abu Lahab.

I seek refuge from it with the Lord of humankind and daybreak.
