Whoever the beloved—or his messenger—visits,
Whoever is visited by the beloved or his messenger,
after that long separation, has his wish fulfilled.
After separation—that one's wish is fulfilled.
للهby God! ماhow أحلىsweet الرسولthe messenger قائلاًsaying

By God, how sweet the messenger is when he says:
By God, how sweet the messenger when he says:
“The beloved has drawn near; his arrival is at hand.”
"Indeed, the beloved's arrival has drawn near!"

Welcome to him! He brought me news of one returning—
Welcome to him! He brought me glad tidings of one coming,
one whose departure drove away my patience in love.
Whose departure drove away my patience in love.

Alas for a lover who has beheld his death,
Alas for a lovesick man who has seen his death,
whose hope is to die of love.
While what he hoped for from his beloved has eluded him.

Fire in his heart—its blaze;
Fire blazes in his heart,
and water from his eyes—its torrent.
And water streams from his eyes.

He thought love a light thing; but when he plunged into
He thought passionate love easy, but when he waded into
its seas, his path grew arduous.
Its seas, his path grew rugged.

Nor was all the heartache he endured enough:
And as though the burning grief he endures were not enough,
his reproacher only added to his pain.
His reproacher even adds to his suffering.

O you who blame me, knowing nothing of passion,
O my reproacher, who knows not what love is,
leave me—I have no means to rid myself of it.
Leave me, for I have no means to dispel it.

Love is a beguiling affair, and its gate
Passionate love is a beguiling affair, and its gate
is hard to leave and easy to enter.
Is hard to exit, yet easy to enter.
