Is it dawn's light that has appeared, or a smiling mouth?

And is it a night of hair grown dark, or pitch-black gloom?

And is what I see a twilight glow with clouds circling it,

    bewildering the gaze—or a veiled one's cheek?

And at his cruelty, has rain poured from the clouds,

or has my eye burst forth in a torrent like the flood of ʿArim?

Who will bring me a gazelle whose pasture is the heart's dark core?

I have revealed my passion for him, unashamed.

    بقوس حاجبه وَردُ الخُدود حُمي

    His eye, an Indian blade, guarded the sanctuary of his mouth;

the roses of his cheeks were guarded by his eyebrow's bow.

His eyes set my heart up as their target.

Alas for a heart shot at by eyes!

    ثم انهمت وسقت خدّيَّ كالديم

    And the eye has gathered tears that clustered together;

then they poured down and watered my cheeks like steady rain.

My longing sapped my patience with what it drew

from love for him, and clothed my innards in sickness.

Alas, alas, for my eye and my liver!

Water and fire—one overflowing, the other ablaze.

O you who took command of my heart and tormented it,

be gentle with my heart—God preserve you, O judge!

Abandon coldness, and do not let my censurer gloat over me.

And the command is yours; decree whatever you wish.
