Long and naked, it sways about,

as though it were a little cob.

عرقه طويل رقيق

كم فيه بخيش ضويق

كم فيه بخيش ضويق

Its root is long and slender;

how many tiny, narrow holes it has!

قاعد على حيله قايم

في الماء نايم

في الماء نايم

Sitting there, yet standing on its own,

asleep in the water,

والورق من حوله عايم

والورق من حوله عايم

قناطر الموز الخضره

قناطر الموز الخضره

with the leaves floating around it.

The green Banana Bridges—

فيها خضره

فيها خضره

يا بخت من جاها بكره

يا بخت من جاها بكره

there is greenery there.

Lucky is whoever comes there in the morning,

بالع خضره

بالع خضره

يا فرح ذاك وبخته

يا فرح ذاك وبخته

having swallowed some green stuff!

How happy that fellow, and how lucky!

ينسى أخوه وأخته

يبقى عليه بسطه حايم

He forgets his brother and his sister.

He keeps roaming about in delight,

like the beasts.

If only this were always mine!

O you who wish to enjoy the sights,

get up and stroll

or honey and little bananas.

And if you start playing dumb there,

pretending to fast,

موت بالجوع وانت ظالم

die of hunger—you have yourself to blame.
