Leave him be, by your lives, my two reproachers, leave him be—

the man who answered a generous man's invitation to a meal.

And give him a little time, so that he may gain what

he hopes for: food he has longed to obtain.

You have been raised in rank, O rice, by rosewater syrup,

and Egyptian honey has not lowered your standing.

And you have my obedience: if you tell me, 'Rise,

eat me,' you will find me heeding what you have said.

O mushawwar, for whom have you gathered the throngs?

I shall surely eat you; and if you doubt me, come!

And O chicken on the platter, why do you not

pity him whose heart has broken in separation from you?

You are filled with stuffing, O mishkāḥ; if only you

would fill the belly of a lover who has never had his fill of you.

The heart delights in the pan-fried portion of you,

whenever it appears, rising high upon the platter.

    Since they browned it, its redness has captivated my mind;

and he who unjustly reproaches me for it has shown no scruple.
