دمياط يا بخت الذي لك وصل

إن حصل

Damietta, how lucky is the one who reaches you,

if he gets

له موز مقشر في صحينات عسل

قد نزل

peeled bananas in little dishes of honey,

served up.

عشق المويز فنه

إن جا أكل منه

Love of the little banana is his art:

if he comes, he eats some of it,

وإن راح سأل عنه

مَن التقاه

and if he leaves, he asks about it

of whoever he meets.

كم ارتفع موزك بغيطه المصون

في الغصون

How high your bananas rise in their protected field,

among the branches!

وكم نصب شوقي إليه حين يكون

في الصحون

And how my longing for them is heightened when they are

in the dishes!

والكسر لي لازم

إن لم أكن جازم

And brokenness is my constant lot,

unless I am resolute

بالعطف له عازم

على لقاه

in affection for them, determined

to meet them.

لا أوحش اللَه منك نجم السفر

قد سفر

May God never leave us bereft of you; the star of the tables

has shone forth.

والقلب من وجدي بقي في خطر

إن خطر

And from my longing my heart remains in danger

if they cross my mind.

أخذ طبيلي أوطار

وأنشد قضا الأوطار

My little drum took on strings,

and sang of desires fulfilled.

بالموز مقيم أو طار

يدوم لقاه

With bananas, whether staying or flying,

may meeting them endure.
