O cupbearer of the drinking companions, without water,

fill my cup and seek aid,

with a full moon, forever exalted,

who takes me captive with his glances.

    And look at the apples—

how they gleam from his cheek!

    And the fragrant musk

    has wafted from his mouth.

    واجلي أقداحي

    So pour my wine,

    and brighten my goblets;

    and toast me with it,

    O drinking companion—you revive me.

O friend, I have seen in my gazelle

    what takes lovers captive:

a brow like the crescent—and I have no

    release from his captivity.

He puts the gazelles to shame

in the flirtation of his eyelids.

How beautiful a man he is!

    He has surpassed the boughs

    when he swayed like myrtle

    and strutted, O people,

    with his proudly swaying figure.

In love he has consumed me.

Union is my cure, and my illness

    comes from fear of separation.

And this was my wish, my edifice,

    throughout all ages.

By the life of my master's head,

a day of union with him

would be mine, were this in my hands

    and as I desired.

    مُضنى مُسبّى

    My heart has become

    worn out, taken captive;

    and perhaps, in time,

he will heal me through union.
