وسمّاكand a fishmonger قلاspurned وصليunion with me دلالاout of coyness
وسمّاك قلا وصلي دلالا
فاثّرso he left حُمرةًredness ببياضin the white of عينيmy eye
فاثّر حُمرةً ببياض عيني
And a fishmonger coyly spurned union with me,
Roses I named you, so join me my guide
Leaving redness in the white of my eye.
Your redness enhancing my eyes so white
أغنّيI sing فيهabout him مقطوعاًa short musical piece وأحلىand the sweetest
أغنّي فيه مقطوعاً وأحلى
غناsinging المقطوعof the short piece عنديto me فيin حُسينHusayn
غنا المقطوع عندي في حُسين
I sing a short piece about him; and the sweetest
Sing you I shall, though parted in two
