كل الورى قصدهم بالجيد لو وقعوا

وليس في قصده كُلٌّ بمسعود

وليس في قصده كُلٌّ بمسعود

All humankind hope they might come upon the good;

All mankind pursue the path of fortune, though it leads them astray,

Yet not everyone is fortunate in pursuing it.

Yet in such pursuits none finds the bliss for which he prayed,

وبالمنى إذ توالى الدهر يُسعدني

وبالمنى إذ توالى الدهر يُسعدني

وقعت عند كمال السعد بالجيد

وقعت عند كمال السعد بالجيد

And as time kept granting me my wishes,

Though the days in swift succession bring me all I crave,

At the height of good fortune, I came upon the good.

Yet when my joy is most complete misfortune comes to save.
