    ونابه العاج مع تعويجه عاري

    The elephant's trunk is part of it, the Creator's handiwork;

and its ivory tusk, for all its curvature, is bare.

Yet in winter it walks on its legs,

yes, even if what is baked were baked with fire.

How charming it is, strutting on a cloudy day from

among the alleys, through mud and rain,

lightly clad in a shirt of murazzaza,

rich in ghee, with syrup flowing through it.

Its eater sobers through it from hunger's hangover,

even if it came to him in an earthenware basin and a platter.

A platter in which halloumi has never lain—

that worm-ridden stuff—may it never be welcomed in any land!

O its eaters—may choking fits afflict your eyes!

Where are the peeled bananas, each as long as a handspan?

How lovely it is, sprawled in the sugar syrup!

I love it—yes, even if it is in honey from the towns.

So call the bananas fish, and call the syrup pools,

and call the palm a net, with a skilled fisherman.

I slip what I catch into my mouth, for fear that

the catch might slide from my palm to my neighbor.

I warned my heart against affection for it, though already

my gaze had bent it with lavish enticement,

until I found universal passion made particular to me,

my passion's binding arising from my thoughts' release.

    وحبّذا تنقضي في الحلو أعماري

    So I said: Die, my heart, in love of it, and you will live;

and how lovely for my lifetimes to pass in sweetness!
