    And by ʿAlī, how sweet you are, O month of Rajab!

    In you, wondrous hanging ornaments passed me by.

    How many a youth they captivated with tying and untying,

    Whose tears they mimicked through coloring and pouring.

    The sugar in them made souls drunk,

    Cast in wine's hue and in the form of cups.

    Redness amid whiteness fashioned

    A banner of joy, whose form was its distinction.

    بل وفي الذوق ترى هذي أحب

    Their moons imitated moon-shaped windows;

    Nay, in taste too, you find these more delightful.

    ليته لو كان في القلب غرب

    A moon of theirs shone in my eye;

    Would that it had set within my heart!

    A ship among them carried off my reason,

    Fashioned of silver amid gold.

    يا ترى ليش ربطوها في طنب

    She does not flee from her owners;

    Why, I wonder, did they tether her to a tent-rope?

    She singled me out for all-embracing longing, when

    She had coiled up my outspread patience like cordage.

    I said, "Will your affection, surely, through meeting

    Lift my brokenness?" She said, "No—weariness."

    She uprooted my endurance as she set sail,

    And with my tears she drifted down when they poured.

    Did she take my tears—how wanton she is!—

    For Egypt's Nile at full flood? And why?
