نظرتI looked إلىat الهلالthe crescent moon وقدand already تبدّتshe appeared
بوجهwith the face of البدرthe full moon مبدعةwondrous in الجمالbeauty
I looked at the crescent moon as she appeared,
I looked upon the crescent moon unveiled
With the full moon’s face, wondrous in beauty.
In the guise of the full moon, creating beauty.
فوافقso it happened إذwhen رأيتهماI saw them both جميعاًtogether
وكلand each قدalready تبدّىappeared فيin جلالsplendor
It so happened that I saw them both together,
When I saw them both together,
And each stood revealed in splendor.
Each arrayed in splendor.
فقلتso I said تُرىI wonder بأيّكماthrough which of you two تلافيmy relief
فأومأتso she gestured احتشاماًout of modesty للهلالtoward the crescent moon
So I said, “I wonder—which of you can bring me relief?”
I asked, "With which will I find consolation?"
So, out of modesty, she gestured toward the crescent.
The crescent gestured modestly.
وتعلمand she knows أنthat ماnot قصديmy aim سواهاother than her
ولكنand yet دافعتنيshe put me off بالمحالwith the impossible
And she knows that I seek none but her,
She knew I sought only her,
Yet she put me off with the impossible.
But propriety drove me to the impossible.
