    The agate of my wine shone amid the pearls of its bubbles,

    like the sun beside a moon within a star of gold.

    فحيّا منسكباً حيّا بمُنسكب

    And the cup's gold was greeted with wine's gold dust;

    so, pouring forth, it greeted a living soul with a pouring stream.

    And seek a path to its limpid stream; she snatched

    my soul, with her exhilaration, from the palm of weariness.

    Ancient in vintage, resembling the sun, she has spoken

    of dawn; her lights appear from the wine jar.

    تسير في دَرَج السرّاء بالأرب

    The eye is where she rises, and the heart where she sets;

    she travels through the stages of joy with desire.

    The wine-strainer wept at parting from her, so she smiled,

    and joined its tears with water and flame.

    A graceful youth greeted with her; his eyes outstripped

    his goblets in capturing amusement and rapture.

    His cheek-down, his two cheeks, and his saliva

    put myrtle, apples, and white honey to shame.

    So behold the virgin wine in the cup, sipping

    her sweet saliva with delight from her moist mouth.

    واخلَع عذارك والقَ الجدّ باللّعب

    And don robes of honor from her unmixed wine to banish distress;

    and cast off your bridle, and meet seriousness with play.

    وهَب هُمُومك للسرّا ولا تَهَب

    And leave the sober behind; vanish, drunk, in her robe of honor;

    and give your worries to joy, and do not fear.

    And ask for your cup in a garden, where they have smiled—

    its flowers—at the sky's weeping through the clouds,

    while doves sang in its branches,

    with their sweet melodies from luxuriant boughs.

    And there, whenever the cupbearer appears with your cup, say:

    O full moon of my day, vanish; O its sun, veil yourself!

    And O my heart, and O my eye, bliss is for you both

    in the garden, with the cup and cupbearer—so be glad, and be glad!
