كمhow long ذاthis التجنّيunjust treatment أماdo you not تخشينyou fear مولاكyour Lord
كم ذا التجنّي أما تخشين مولاك
فيin هجرforsaking صبّa lovesick man ولوand even though قدindeed خُنتyou betrayed يرعاكhe cares for you
في هجر صبّ ولو قد خُنت يرعاك
How long this unjust treatment? Do you not fear your Lord
How much this betrayal, do you not fear your Master
in forsaking a lovesick man who cares for you, though you have betrayed him?
In estranging a lover though you betrayed him
قدindeed ذلhe was humbled فيin الهجرestrangement مذsince عزّتbecame hard to attain مطالبهhis desires
قد ذل في الهجر مذ عزّت مطالبه
علىover حشاكyour heart دلالcoyness الحبlove ولاّكhas made you ruler
على حشاك دلال الحب ولاّك
He has been humbled by estrangement, since his desires became hard to attain.
He has been humbled by estrangement ever since you made demands
Love's coyness has given you command over your heart.
Upon your cheek the tokens of love have faded now
قاسىhe endured جفاكyour coldness وماand how أقساكcruel you are هلis it? حجراًa stone
قاسى جفاك وما أقساك هل حجراً
قدindeed صارhas become قلبكyour heart لاnot يحنوshows compassion علىfor شاكone who laments
قد صار قلبك لا يحنو على شاك
He endured your coldness—how cruel you are! Is it a stone
You were harsh in your rejection, how harsh you were! As if
that your heart has become, with no pity for one who laments?
Your heart has turned to stone, no longer caring for your lover
تنامsleep عيناكyour eyes ليلاًat night باتhe spent the night يسهرهhe stays awake through it
تنام عيناك ليلاً بات يسهره
يرعىhe watches بهin it قمراًa moon حاكىresembled مُحَيّاكyour face
يرعى به قمراً حاكى مُحَيّاك
Your eyes sleep at night while he spends it awake,
Your eyes sleep at night while he stays awake
gazing that night at a moon that resembles your face.
Keeping watch over a moon that resembles your beauty
تقاصرdwindled الصبرpatience منfrom طولlength البكاءweeping أماis there not
تقاصر الصبر من طول البكاء أما
منany رحمةmercy لمُعنّىfor a tormented one فيin الهوىlove باكweeping
من رحمة لمُعنّى في الهوى باك
Patience has dwindled from long weeping—is there no
Patience wears thin from the length of weeping. Is it not
mercy for one tormented by love, who weeps?
Out of some mercy for the anguished lover's lament?
وليتand would that شعريmy knowledge هلis there? للهجرfor estrangement منany سببreason
وليت شعري هل للهجر من سبب
أمor فيin العناanguish أبداًforever يفنىhe wastes away مُعنّاكyour tormented one
أم في العنا أبداً يفنى مُعنّاك
And would that I knew: is there any reason for estrangement,
I wonder, does estrangement have any cause?
or will the one you torment waste away forever in anguish?
Or does your disdain for me last forever?
أماdo you not علمتyou know بأنthat الدهرTime منتقمan avenger
أما علمت بأن الدهر منتقم
يلقيcasts عليكupon you هوىlove مَنone who ليسdoes not يهواكlove you
يلقي عليك هوى مَن ليس يهواك
Do you not know that Time is an avenger,
Do you not know that fate is vengeful
casting upon you love for one who does not love you?
And will make you love one who does not love you?
فالناسfor people يُجزونare repaid فيin الدنياthis world بماfor what عملواthey have done
فالناس يُجزون في الدنيا بما عملوا
منّاًkindness بمَنٍّfor kindness وإهلاكاًand destruction بإهلاكfor destruction
منّاً بمَنٍّ وإهلاكاً بإهلاك
For people are repaid in this world for what they have done:
For people are rewarded in this life according to their deeds
kindness for kindness, and destruction for destruction.
Evil for evil, and ruin for causing ruin
