    تذكرني أويقات السوالف

    Glances and necks stir memories;

    they recall to me brief moments of bygone days.

    When the beloved departs, every dwelling

    I stay in has tears flowing within it.

    And I thought the eyelid kept a seal

    over my tears—yet look, there it is, dripping.

    And this is no disgrace for one like me,

    nor does anyone who blames me for it understand.

    For anything short of utter self-sacrifice is not enough

    for a lovesick man who does not desist from his passion.

    O master from whom my heart hopes

    for union, while it trembles at delay.

    فَجُد لفتى على الأخطار شارَف

    Your little servant buys his wishes with his soul;

    so be generous to a youth on the brink of danger.

    I wonder: will a thirsty man be seen with union’s cup,

    one who, for love of you, shuns the petty folk of reproach?

    Whenever mention of you passes—sweet as it is—

    among lovers, it makes every oath-taker break his oath.

    For if wishes came to every giver of bribes,

    he would spend the night sipping at the lips of union with you.

    And if estrangement did not follow

    love’s union, he would not end up ruined.

    He finds anything short of union with you no protection—

    a lover guarding himself in the state of abandonment.

    وإن تبخل به فالصبّ آسف

    For union with you heals the wounds of abandonment;

    and if you withhold it, the lovesick man grieves.
