What harm would it have done those who departed with the lovesick one's heart,

Had they taken him along when they left?

Instead, they left him lying helpless in their dwellings,

Brimming with tears, his eyes never at rest.

He keeps crying out as longings torment him:

Oh, if only I knew where they have settled with my heart!

My longing has melted, patience has vanished, and down have streamed

The tears of my eyes, while my entrails burn.

    والصبر مُنفصل والوجد مُتّصل

    So the heart is ablaze, and the eye streams with tears;

And patience is severed, and longing unbroken.

O you, at whose parting the heart melted with sorrow,

Be gentle with a lovesick man who has no recourse left.

He has kept vigil through a night in which

Your eyelids lie adorned with the kohl of sweet sleep.

What harm would it do to show mercy to one who has little help,

And for whom, because of you, both plain and mountain have grown too narrow?
