O my two reproachers, ask about the love-worn one—ask,
O you who reproach me, ask about my torment, ask,
If you think he has already forgotten his loved ones.
If you think it has ceased for my loved ones, ask.

And cease reproaching a lover whose eyelids
And blame not a lover whose eyelids have pleaded
Have made plain what was obscure in his condition.
For his state has made clear what was once unclear.

ورأى التهتّك في هواه تجمُّلا
He donned wantonness when he cast off modesty,
He discarded his mantle when passion disrobed,
And deemed shamelessness in his passion an adornment.
And saw violation in this love he extolled.

O you who made my blood lawful by severing your bond,
O you who made lawful my blood with your leaving,
And by your desertion untied the knot of my endurance,
And with your desertion my patience annulled.

Be gentle, for my eye, from the blaze within my breast,
Gently, for my eyes from the embers of yearning
When it went mad, was fettered with tears.
Have maddened with tears that incessantly streamed.

والقل في حُلل الغرام توحّلا
For tears stream down, while my patience is gone,
My tears flow in torrents, my patience is barren,
And the heart [uncertain reading], in love’s robes, has sunk into mire.
And my heart in the garb of passion is creamed.
