أوجد الوجد بقلبي أبدا
A fleeing gazelle drove sleep away,
Sleep has scattered a gazelle, scattering
and kindled passion in my heart forever.
Forever longing awoke in my heart

How much he twisted and turned away from me and how much
he falsely promised a visit, then ran away.
The mocker falsely promised and appointed

Alas for me, since he fears no retribution.
Alas, it does not fear being tied down

It is a branch, it is a wonder, whenever

Whenever its glance speaks to my heart
it wears patience thin and renews my longing.
I summon patience while my passion renews

The lovesick lover came thirsting to his dusky lips,
The youth whose water is rose, thirsty
and drew death and ruin from them.
Drank from it and met a rosy death

ولدي العذّال يبدي جلدا
So among loved ones he laments his affliction,
So with the loved ones he laments what ails him
and before the reproachers he displays fortitude.
While with the tormentor he shows endurance
