إِذاwhen هَجَوتُكُمُI satirize you لَمnot أَخشَI fear سَطوَتَكُمyour might
إِذا هَجَوتُكُمُ لَم أَخشَ سَطوَتَكُم
وَإِنand if مَدَحتُI praise فَماthen not حَظّيmy lot سِوىexcept التَّعَبِtoil
وَإِن مَدَحتُ فَما حَظّي سِوى التَّعَبِ
When I satirize you, I do not fear your might.
If I insult you, I fear not your tyranny,
And if I offer praise, my lot is nothing but toil.
And if I praise you, my reward is but fatigue,
فَحِينَso when لَمdid not أَلفِfind لاneither خَوفاًfear وَلاnor أَمَلاًhope
فَحِينَ لَم أَلفِ لا خَوفاً وَلا أَمَلاً
رَغِبتُI felt drawn فيto الهَجوِsatire إِشفاقاًfor fear مِنَof الكَذِبِlying
رَغِبتُ في الهَجوِ إِشفاقاً مِنَ الكَذِبِ
So, when I found neither fear nor hope,
So when I found neither fear nor hope,
I turned to satire, for fear of lying.
I desired satire to avoid lies.
