قُلsay لِلنَّسيمto the breeze إِذاwhen حَمَلتَyou carry تَحِيَّةًa greeting
فاهدِthen offer السَّلامَthe greeting of peace لِجَوشَنٍto Jawshan وَهِضابِهِand its hills
Say to the breeze: when you carry a greeting,
Tell the breeze, when it bears a greeting,
then offer peace to Jawshan and its hills.
To spread peace to Gezira and its plateaus,
وَاسأَلهُand ask it هَلwhether سحبtrailed الرَّبيعُspring رِداءَهُits cloak
أَوor جَرَّdragged ذَيلَthe train الفَضلِof bounty مِنfrom هُدَّابِهِits fringes
And ask it: has spring trailed its cloak,
And ask if spring has shed its cloak,
or dragged the train of bounty from its fringes,
Or trailed the train of bounty from its clouds.
وَتَبَسَّمَتand smiled عَنهُbecause of it الرِّياضُthe gardens وَأَفصَحَتand spoke eloquently
بِثَناءin praise of بارِقِهِits lightning وَمَدِّand the spread of سَحابِهِits clouds
and have the gardens smiled because of it and spoken eloquently
The gardens have smiled at it and spoken
in praise of its lightning and the spread of its clouds?
With praise of its lightning flash and stretch of clouds.
فَلَقَدfor indeed حَنَنتُI yearned وَعادَنيand visited me مِنfrom نَحوِهِits direction
شَجَنٌa sorrow بَخِلتُI withheld بِهِit عَلىfrom خُطّابِهِits suitors
For I have indeed yearned, and from its direction came to me
For I have yearned, and it has brought me back
a sorrow I withheld from its suitors.
A longing I grudged to share with its envoys.
وَصَبابَةٍand many a longing عَلِقَتclung بِقَلبِto a heart مُتَيَّمenslaved by love
وَصَلَreached الغَرامُpassion إِلَيهِit قَبلَbefore حِجابِهِits veil
And many a longing clung to a heart enslaved by love,
And a youthful passion that clings to my love-lorn heart,
which passion reached before its veil.
And desire had reached him before its veil.
وَإِذاand when الغَريبُthe stranger صَباyearned إِلىfor أَوطانِهِhis native lands
شَوقاًout of longing فَمَعناهُthen his meaning إِلىtoward أَحبابِهِhis loved ones
And when a stranger yearns for his native lands,
When an exile pours towards his homelands,
out of longing, it is his loved ones he means.
His longing is towards his loved ones.
