I seek God's forgiveness: my secret in love is public.
I seek Allah's forgiveness, my secret love for passion made public
And I have found contentment, so favors bestowed on me are few.
And I've become content, so favors mean little to me

I have known my age, so I paid no heed to any event
I know my fate, so I don't care about its events
within it; neither joy nor sorrow is mine.
Neither joy nor sorrow move me

A manner of living whose consequences are not feared,
A refined life not fearing consequences
and which stirs neither rancors nor grudges.
Nor rousing hatreds or sorrow

Astray went those who saw benefit in offspring;
Lost are those who value lineage
had they judged rightly, they would neither have reared nor cradled children.
Else they wouldn't raise or cherish children

Men have befriended one another; were you to reveal to them
Some men are virtuous, if you unveiled
human nature, they would fear everyone they had trusted.
People's nature, those now trusted would be feared

وَيُنصَرُ الجَهلُ حَتّى يُعبَدَ الوَثَنُ
Fate proceeds with what minds are powerless to grasp,
Fate runs its course, though minds cannot conceive it
and ignorance is championed until an idol is worshiped.
Ignorance prevails until idols are worshipped

Injustice is innate; but for evil, no praise would go
Oppression is the norm, without evil, excellence
to India or Yemen for the making of gleaming swords.
In neither India nor Yemen's craft is found

You blamed your age when a calamity befell you;
You blame your fate when it strikes you with something
by the likes of what you lament, time is known.
Fate is known through the same blows it lands

Ease up on yourself, for life is cut short,
Be humble, for life is but borrowed
and death is awaited, and the noble man is tested.
Death awaits, free men are tested

Let no disposition whose outward appearance pleases deceive you,
Don't be fooled by a refined outward manner
for neither eye nor ear tells the truth.
Eyes and ears cannot discern truth

I kept company with people who count evil
I kept company with people to whom evil
as prudence, counseled by judgment and keen wits.
Seemed prudent, twisted minds' judgments

فِعلَ القَبيح فَظَنّوا أَنَّهُ حَسَنُ
They were blind to right guidance, and their souls grew accustomed
They strayed from righteousness, their souls corrupted
to doing what is ugly, so they thought it good.
To think wrong is right, this they assumed

Their arrows all turned my way
and I have shields in my indifference to their homelands.
My asceticism in their lands seen as madness

I have guarded my honor: no disgrace, no stain.
My honor guarded, no shame or vileness

When I hunger, a body with no life in it;
When hungry, just a body with no life
and if I thirst, water that has no price.
When thirsty, water valueless

The best of drinks is what sustains life
The best drink is what sustains life
in creatures' natural constitution: neither water nor milk.
Neither water nor milk in primal nature

And the best sustenance is what is freely given to its seeker
The best food is what the earth provides freely
by the soil's hand, and served to him by the pouring raincloud.
To the seeker, apart from strife

nor do trades play a part in what I earn.
Nor work in occupations with cunning men

I inherited the wealth of people whose time was long ago;
I inherited from people long gone
I grew rich through them, though I never learned how they grew rich.
Grew rich though I know not how they prospered

They ruined their lives by neighboring the Romans:
By bordering Rome they ruined their lives
if they fought, they took captives; if they made peace, they dissembled.
In war they were captive, in peace they were sly

It is al-Awasim, the target of every crushing calamity;
These fortresses are the target of every pauper
it would not be inhabited were it not a homeland.
Else they wouldn't be home despite the pain

Many were buried here till Judgement Day

for many a ruined site has been effaced by your bounty.
Only your tyranny remains firm

Glory to Allah - no creation bewilders
can an effaced trace cramp a camel-watering ground?
Nor can favors reach the envious soul

without drowsiness still lingering in its eyelids.

How many made pledges in disputation

to understand you, yet did not fulfill what they pledged!
Better blindness than the looseness of tongues

Fear your companion, and keep silent if you are afflicted with him;
No quote, however pleasing, should fool you
for inarticulacy is better than what eloquence brings.

All people are borne of an unchaste mother
neither Ibn Sirin nor al-Hasan is trustworthy.

no root or branch among them has grown pure.

so let not the tales of those who perished deceive you.
