He roused her as she slipped free of her hobble.

She had filled her saddlecloths with her bulk.

His longings kept driving her on,

until sore feet made her cast off her saddles.

What has the she-camel to do with his passion?

If only he were fair, or took pity on her!

He wanted her to drink the water of Hajir—

does he seek to slake her thirst, or exhaust her?

Surely the hearts owe her protection,

for she has known their anguish.

    أَعجَلَها السّائِقُ أَن تَنالَها

    A greeting came to her with the east wind;

the driver hurried her before she could receive it.

How often she asks the lightning about Suwayqa,

and it deliberately leaves her question unanswered,

fearing for her hearts, should she learn

that the morning rains have effaced its ruins:

pastures where she grazed, secure from capture,

    so her pursuer never saw her put to flight;

and where she stretched her stride through the lush young grass,

and in high spirits matched her calves' leaps,

and let loose in play, as though

you would take her, in her folly, for one of her weaned calves.

Sore-footed, she has ceased to recognize her own pads,

and in leanness has rivaled her shadows.

And the desert stretched out before her steps,

as though it begrudged her departure.

So soothe her with talk of Hajir,

and let the desert do whatever it pleases.
