جَهِلتُمyou have been ignorant فَماso … not وَجهُthe face النَّهارِof day بِواضِحclear
لَدَيكُمto you وَلاnor طَرَفُthe eye الدُّجىof night بِكَحيلِdarkened with kohl
You have been ignorant, so the face of day is not clear
to you, nor is the eye of night darkened with kohl.
وَغَرَّكُمُand has deluded you طولُthe length المَقامِof the stay سَفاهَةًout of foolishness
كَأَنَّكُمُas though you لَمdid not تَسمَعواyou hear بِرَحيلِof departure
And your long stay has deluded you in your folly,
as though you had never heard of departure.
إِذاwhen وَقَفَhe stopped العانيthe distressed man عَلَيكُمbefore you فَإِنَّماthen only
يَمُرُّhe passes بِرَسمby a remnant فيamong الدِّيارِthe dwellings مَحيلِdesolate
When one in distress stops before you, he merely
passes by a desolate remnant among the dwellings.
فَإِنso if نِلتُمُyou have attained خِصبَthe fullness الجُسومof the bodies نَضارَةfreshness
فَرُبَّthen many an كَلامutterance كَالهِلالِlike the crescent moon نَحيلِslender
So if you have gained bodily fullness and bloom,
many an utterance is slender as the crescent moon.
