Every day, a loosening and a binding;
Every day she is active and bound,
When will her ailment find relief?
So when will her illness be gone?

If tugging at her girths has given her
If her alluring charm made her foolish,
Foolishness, necks have indeed grown weary on her account.
Then necks lusted madly for her.

She complains of thirst, though tears are watering places,
She complains of her beloved while tears are springs,
And of aching footpads, though cheeks serve as soles.
Cheeks and faces become muddy.

Into her; not all night travel is hurried.
For not all concealments are necks.

Let the breeze stay away from its news,
For its tale has subtle embellishments.
For it has margins for gossip and slander.

No tryst of lovers remains hidden,
But the eye-corners have already borne witness to them.
Except those witnessed by spies.

And if you were a neighbor of passion,
A fire whose heat the lovers share.
Then lovers shared its heat.

He spends his life confused, no triumph or failure,
Bewildered, with neither triumph nor failure.
Scattered with purposeless determination.

Hope, with despair looming within it,
A hope appears but despair lurks within,
And wealth behind which destitution shows through.
And wealth that heals poverty behind it.

Eyes have not felt it when asleep.

The delusions of wishes entice him as if
Truth, and their lying promise a covenant.
They are true while their promise is a pact.

The wicked thrive and are serious in sin
A virgin whom sustenance has never noticed.
While sustenance is heedless of the chaste.

In it, with no release from his captivity.
Would have lasted in it without any release.

The leader, the intrepid, calamities like
From his traversing the desert with them, young camels.
What the desert is accustomed to from fate.

With good news, so his mercy mixes with care.

While water shimmers on its surfaces.
While its surface has rippling water.

No exhilaration from wine has stirred him; rather,
Revelry did not shake him, but manners
His virtues have given him the rapture of its cup.
Gave him the intoxication of his cup.

In love they are the promise of union, and in sleep
It is the promise of union in love, the specter
A phantom vision, and at parting an embrace.
Of fantasy in parting, and embrace in farewell.

He traces his descent to a lineage; an inspired one advanced
He aspires to a lineage that precedes the luminous stars,
Within it, and even the stars found it hard to catch up.
With pride in it, so seeking access was hard.

A house possessing ancient honor; any other
A house whose ancient honor others share
Is like gray hair: the newness of its like is decay.
Like grey hair adds gravitas to its ethics.

The kneeling camels are many, the pavilions spacious,
Blessings are plenty, domes are spacious,
Generosity is a flood, and the serving bowls are deep.
Generosity is abundant, and brows are frowning.

He revived generosity, rejoicing; then, through his forbearance,
He revived chivalry then with his forbearance
His cheer inspires awe, as though it were a lowered gaze.
He is a human who is feared like a lion's growl.

Dry times did not hurt her, for you are

Her spring, and your palm is her pouring rain.

Ibn Badis thought your absence a paradise,
But lean mounts, slender as bows, denied it.
But she refused, solid as lead.

Revelry distracted him from foresight,
Tuneful, and a cup brimming with wine.
As did a cup with wine, clamor and song.

He continued composing foolishness with assumptions,
And in conjectures lie deceit and hypocrisy.
And assumptions breed deceit and hypocrisy.

A flock of wild cows and your spears were leafy branches.

He fled, rebuked by the legs of a swimming steed;
He fled disgraced, his footsteps faltering,
Pride bolted away with him, though it was mere flight.
Seized by humility as they sped like lightning.

He threw his sight into the claws of exile,
Famished, at whose name the locks swing open.
An abyss whose depths open with his name.

The pagans competed for the dregs of his cup
After the sinners had grown drunk on it.
After the sinners amongst them were inebriated.

I met them at Latakia so the two seas collided,
Two seas: still water and thoroughbred steeds.
One stagnant and the other pure.

Crooked, whose bend the burning straightened.
A crooked old she-camel accustomed to burning.
