أَتَذكُرُdo you mention فَخراًglory فيamong قَبائِلِthe tribes of يَعرُبٍYaʿrub
وتُنكِرُand you deny قاراًQār وَهوَand it is أَبلَجُbright واضِحُclear
Do you speak of glory among the tribes of Yaʿrub,
Do you recall pride in the Arabian tribes?
And deny Qār, though it is bright and clear?
Yet you deny a neighbor, though evident and clear.
وَيَومَand on the day of اللِّقاbattle غادَرتُموهاyou left it ذَميمَةًdisgraced

And on the day of battle, you left it disgraced,
On the day we met, you abandoned it, miserable,
A camel-driver of shame taking it onward, singing aloud.
As one burdened with disgrace proceeds vociferously.
وَفيand in رَوضَةِthe meadow of السُّلَّانِal-Sullān ثُلَّتwere toppled عُروشُكُمyour thrones
ذَوابِلُslender spears فيin إِيمانِناour faith (likely intended: our right hands) وَصفائِحُand broad blades
And in the meadow of al-Sullān your thrones were toppled,
In the garden of the Sultan collapsed your dwellings—
By slender spears in our right hands, and broad blades.
Torrents in our faith, and open sores.
رَعَيتُمyou grazed on هَشيمَthe dry herbage of الوادِيَينِthe two valleys وَبِالرُّباand on the hills

You grazed on the dry herbage of the two valleys, while on the hills
You pastured the remnants of the two valleys, and with interest
Are pastures whose fragrant growth sways.
Meadows where its vegetation wildly mingles.
إِذاwhen شُنَّتِwere launched الغاراتُthe raids حُطَّتwere taken down بُيوتُكُمyour tents
حِذاراًout of fear وَلَمand did not يَسرَحgo out to graze مِنَfrom البَركِthe kneeling camel herd سارِحُa grazing animal
When raids were launched, your tents were taken down
When raids were waged, your homes crumbled
Out of fear, and no camel of the kneeling herd went out to graze.
Wary, no horse was let loose from the cattle-pen.
رَغَتbellowed كَلِماتيmy words رَغوَةَthe bellow of السَّقبِthe male camel calf فيكُمُagainst you
وَجاشَتand surged عَلىover ماwhat تَكرَهونَyou hate القَرائِحُpoetic gifts
My words bellowed against you like a male camel calf,
My words seethed in you like the foam of a goatskin,
And poetic gifts surged with what you hate.
And boiled over what you detest in hidden thoughts.
وَسالَتand flowed بِأَبكارِwith virgins of القَوافيthe rhymes شِعابُهاtheir ravines
عَلَيكُمover you وَهُنَّand they are المُخزِياتُthose that disgrace الفَواضِحُthose that expose
And their ravines flowed with virgin rhymes
Their valleys streamed down virginal rhymes upon you,
Over you—and they disgrace and expose you.
As they are the disgraces openly exposed.
