وَأَهيَفَand a slender-waisted one مِنآدَsupple القوىthe limbs يَبذُلُhe offers القِرىhospitality
لِطارِقِهِto his night visitor جَهراًopenly وَيَمنَعُهُand he withholds it سِرّاsecretly
And a slender one, supple of limb, offers hospitality
openly to his night visitor, yet withholds it in secret.
لَهُhe has بِزَّةُthe garb النُسّاكِof ascetics لَولاwere it not for صِناعَةٌa craft
يُعانيhe pursues بِهاthrough it الأَطماعُcravings أَشعَثَdisheveled مُغبَرّاdust-covered
His is the garb of ascetics—but for a craft
through which he pursues his cravings, disheveled and dust-covered.
يَهابُhe is feared عَلىdespite أَنَّthe fact that الخُمولَobscurity طِباعَهُhis nature
وَفيand in أَيِّwhatever أَرضland حَلَّhe settles كانَتit becomes لَهُfor him سِتراa covering
He is feared, though obscurity is his nature;
and whatever land he settles in becomes his covering.
إِذاif صَحِبَhe accompanies النُسّاكَthe ascetics أَكسَبهمhe earns them قَرىhospitality
وَإِنand if صَحِبَhe accompanies الحُجّاجَthe pilgrims أَكسَبَهُمhe earns them وِزراsin
If he accompanies ascetics, he earns them hospitality;
and if he accompanies pilgrims, he earns them sin.
