أَحقادُها وَتَسَالَمَت أَضدادُها
Why do I see that, in hatred of you, forgotten are
its grudges, while its adversaries have made peace?

And they contended for a rulership that, but for piety,
would have been beyond reach, its seekers falling short of it.

al-Husayn was slain, yet its rancors did not die down.

By God, but for its Taym and its ‘Adi,
its Yazid and its Ziyad would have feared defiance.

Keen swords struck you at Karbala;
on the day of the Saqifa their scabbards were torn apart.

The blood debts of idolatry were pursued against you thereafter;
its withers had been cut down and its mainstay overthrown.
