A heart that finds no rest from pounding,

    and time that shows no generosity to the wise;

and an eyelid whose tears seem

like clouds contending over a well.

And did the sons of Hazn ibn 'Amr know

my proud defiance in the face of calamities' counsel?

And time has left of my strength in battle

as much as coupling leaves of an amorous woman.

And lodged my family in an abode of misery

from which the south wind's playful gust withdrew.

    لَقَد صَعُبَ النِّداء عَلى المُجيبِ

    There they answered the summons of death;

hard indeed was the call for the one who answered.

If gray hair is separation from fair women,

then union with them means casting gray hair aside.

'Adi calls to me with his sigh,

and appears upon the dune if I weep.

And were my eyelids then to infect him with weeping,

he would lavish strange tears upon it.

Has he grown used to separation? Hearts have grown still,

lulled concerning you by deceitful hope.

By your memory, how have the nights sullied

cloaks never wrapped around a blameworthy person?

And how has the dust stripped you of beauty

from which the tender bough takes its freshness?

You dwelt in the heart; then it granted you an excuse,

so it equated love for you with its throbbing.

And the eyelids betrayed you, for they remained

devoted to lamentation after your departure.

Our nights at Dhu Salam lingered

over you, unfrightened by the watcher.

    لَقَد أَكثَرتِ مِن حُسنٍ وَطيبِ

    So I seek nothing more fragrant than their east wind;

you have lavished beauty and fragrance indeed.

When the rugged upland is perfumed by lavender

and turns the white she-camels away from weariness,

I thought its breeze, whenever we inhaled it,

contended with us for dominion over hearts.

So it blew across your grave's earth, without startling

the companion of its dust as the wind stirred,

and clasped the surface of its sand,

    gently, with a lover's handclasp.

And deemed it too grave to surprise it with a touch,

so it imitated a suspicious man's visit.

Have you forgotten the meetings in those dwelling places

and the burning anguish they soothed?

In prostration, we plundered Najd's soil,

and it breathed fragrance over our hanging hems and necklines.

And we, while time had favors

whose bounty was entrusted to Shu'ub, Death,

would correspond from afar through remembrance,

and reproach with glances from nearby.

I yearned for the arak trees, and Sa'd said:

You are stirred with longing; what excuse has one so moved?

I knew you to yearn for nothing but glory.

Did you think its branches were spear-shafts at play?

So would that my inhaling lavender's fragrance

were my share of the world, despite my ambitions.

And O lightning of al-Ghuwayr, you drew so near

that my sword's edge grows jealous of you over me.

I accompanied you, O Dhaka', and you were swifter in travel

and more enduring in the trackless deserts and plains.

And we clad you in a mantle of dust, until

you took revenge on us by making us pale.
