يُروىis recounted حَديثُthe account of نَداهُhis generosity عَنon the authority of أَعدائِهِhis enemies
And a much-reproached man, headlong in his ardor,
With Mu'adhdhal, continuing his excesses
the tale of whose generosity is told by his enemies.
The tale of his enmity is recounted against his foes
لَدنٍsupple كَعالِيَةِlike the upper part of القَناةِthe spearshaft يَخِفُّhe is swift فيin
عَزَماتِهِhis resolves وَيَميدُand he sways فيin أَهوائِهِhis passions
Supple as the upper spearshaft, he is swift in
Like a tall spear, he wavers in his resolves
his resolves, and sways in his passions.
And meanders in his whims
ثَمِلُdrunken الشَّمائلِmanners مالَhe swayed فيin أَعطافِهِhis sides
وَوِدادِهِand his affection وَنَعيمِهِand his bliss وَشَقائِهِand his misery
Drunken in manner, he swayed in his frame,
Full of vices, he leans into his sides
and in his affection, his bliss, and his misery.
And his loves, comforts, and misfortunes
عَجِلَتhastened عَلَيهِupon him يَدُthe hand of الحِمامdeath وَعُودُهُand his stem
رَيّانُlush مِنwith خَمرِthe wine of الشَّبابِyouth وَمائِهِand its water
The hand of death fell swiftly upon him, while his stem
The hand of fate hastened upon him, and his return
was lush with the wine of youth and its water.
Intoxicated with the wine of youth and its water
وَتَتابَعَتand followed in succession هَفَواتُهُhis lapses وَلَرُبَّماand indeed often
فَلَّhe blunted الخُطوبَcalamities بِخَطرَةٍwith a passing thought مِنfrom رائِهِhis judgment
And his lapses followed one another, and often
And his lapses followed one another, and sometimes
he blunted calamities with a flash of his judgment.
He stumbled over a whim from his opinions
عَجَباًhow astonishing! لِحَدِّat the edge of السَّيفِthe sword كَيفَhow أَصابَهُit struck him
وَمَضاؤُهُand its keenness فيin الرَّوعterror دونَless than مَضائِهِhis keenness
How strange that the sword's edge struck him,
Wondrous is the edge of the sword, how it struck him
though its keenness in battle fell short of his;
And its sharpness in fright, not in its sharpening
وَلِمصعَبٍand at an untamed camel مَلأَfilled الزَّمانَthe age هَديرُهُhis bellowing
قادوهُthey led him بَعدَafter شَماسِهِhis restiveness وَإِبائِهِand his defiance
and that an untamed camel whose bellow filled the age
And for Mus'ab who filled the world with his tumult
was led by them, after all his restiveness and defiance!
They led him after his authority and refusal
إِنif يَرفَعوهُthey raise him فَقَدthen already غَنواthey had no need بِعَلائِهِbecause of his eminence
أَوor يَشهِروهُthey display him فَقَدthen already كفُواthey were spared the need بِثَنائِهِby praise of him
If they raise him up, his eminence has already made that needless;
Whether they raise him, they have sung his praises
or display him, his renown has already sufficed them.
Or vilify him, they have sufficed with his virtues
أَوor تُبدِعdevise outrages الأَعداءthe enemies فيهِagainst him فَسُنَّةthen a custom
لِلدَّهرِof time جاريَةٌongoing عَلىupon نُظرائِهِhis peers
Or if his enemies devise outrages against him, it is a custom
Or if the enemies innovate against him, then a
of time, ever visited upon his peers.
Sunnah for fate proceeding against its peers
لاnot يَفرَحونَthey rejoice بِهاin it فَكَمfor how many مِنof شامِتٍa gloater
بِحِمامِهِat his death وَلَعَلَّهُand perhaps he فيin دائِهِhis affliction
They do not rejoice in it, for how many a gloater
They will not rejoice in it - how many gloaters
at his death may himself share his affliction!
Over his demise, though perhaps he still draws breath
ياO صاحِبَdweller in الجَدَثِthe grave الغَريبِdistant وَدُونَهُand before it
خَطَرٌperil يُعَدُّis reckoned مَسافَةًa distance فيin نائِهِits remoteness
O dweller in the distant grave, before which
O owner of the strange grave, and below it
lies peril, counted as distance in its remoteness.
Danger that makes distance in its groaning
ذَكَرَrecalled الغَمامُthe cloud عَلىabove ثَراكَyour dust عَلاقَةًa bond of affection
تَجريflow بِهاbecause of it العَبَراتُthe tears مِنfrom أَنوائِهِits rain showers
The cloud recalled a bond above your dust,
The clouds remembered over your tomb a
for which tears stream from its showers.
Tie by which tears flow from their streams
وَتَنَفَّسَتand breathed فيهِin it الرِّياحُthe winds مَريضَةًailing
مِنfrom حَرِّthe heat of نارِthe fire of الحُزنِgrief أَوor برحائِهِits anguish
And the winds breathed there, ailing
And the winds breathed upon it, sick
from the heat of grief's fire or its anguish.
From the heat of the fire of grief or its relief
فَلَقَدfor indeed جَفَوتُكَI kept away from you رَهبَةًout of fear وَلَرُبَّماand indeed often
هَجَرَforsook الصَّديقُthe friend وَأَنتَwhile you فيin أَحشائِهِhis inner depths
For I have kept away from you out of fear, and often
I surely neglected you out of fear, and maybe
a friend forsakes you, though you are deep within his heart.
A friend neglects while you are still in his bosom
