    باتَت تُجَرِّدُهُ يَدُ الأَمطارِ

    Ah, I lay sleepless at the flash of lightning traveling by night;

the hand of the rains kept unsheathing it all night.

It appears, and the rain conceals it, as though it were

a resolve tugged to and fro by thoughts.

It came upon disheveled men robbed of sleep by

the prosperity of the base and the neglect of the noble.

They turned to their swords, as though the swords

had sworn to aid them against fate.

    ذُلُّ العَدوِ بِها وَعِزُّ الجارِ

    A nobleman of a tribe urges their glory onward;

through it the foe is humbled and the neighbor honored.

He delights in the shining lightning, even if it hurled

a brand of fire into every limb.

O phantom of ʿAdhba, what guided you to a band

who kept company with darkness, drunk without wine?

Separation’s keen blade kept rending their union,

until you visited them by night upon their camel-saddles.

O dwelling, may the dune be watered; our companions

were its gazelles, and night had the hue of cheek-down.

In those days within you, whenever the hand of love wished,

it bestowed a full moon of night and a sun of day.

Their nights were brief, yet they

leave souls lingering long in remembrance.

So may every night-traveling cloud water your ruins,

pledged to make the blossoms smile,

singing as it strings upon the necks of the hills

two necklaces of fragrant ʿarār and bahār flowers:

blossoms like the blossoms of the bright stars, except that they

smile from those stars’ flowing tears.
