بَقيتُI lived on وَقَدand already شَطَّتwent far away بِكُمwith you غُربَةُestrangement النَّوىseparation
وَماand not كُنتُI was أَخشىfear أَنَّنيthat I بَعدَكُمafter you أَبقىremain alive
I have lived on, though the estrangement of separation has carried you far away.
I remained while separation from you has swept the homes
And I had not feared that I would live on after you.
And I did not fear that I would remain after you
وَعَلَّمتُمونيand you taught me كَيفَhow أَصبِرُI endure عَنكُمُwithout you
وَأَطلُبُand I seek مِنfrom رِقِّbondage الغَرامِpassion بِكُمfor you عِتقاfreedom
And you have taught me how to endure being without you,
And you taught me how to be patient without you
And seek freedom from the bondage of my passion for you.
And seek with the shackles of passion for you, freedom
فَماfor not قُلتُI said يَوماًever لِلبُكاءِto weeping عَلَيكُمُover you
رُوَيداًslowly وَلاnor لِلشَّوقِto longing نَحوكُمtoward you رِفقاgently
For never did I say to my weeping over you,
So I never said to crying over you, gently
“Slow down,” nor to my longing for you, “Be gentle.”
Nor for yearning toward you, slowly
فَماfor not الحُبُّlove إِلّاexcept أَنto أعُدَّI deem قَبيحَكُمyour ugly conduct
إِليَّtoward me جَميلاًbeautiful وَالقِلىand hatred مِنكُمُfrom you عِشقاpassionate love
For love is nothing but my deeming your ill treatment
For love is not but that I count your ugliness
Of me beautiful, and hatred from you passionate love.
To me beautiful, and your scarcity from me, love.
