Thoughts were ennobled by composing your praise,

And chronicles were adorned by accounts of you.

    لا البَحرُ يُنكِرُها وَلا المَطَرُ

    The traces of your generosity are not hidden;

Neither the sea denies them nor the rain.

Your good fortune in battle offers lessons,

    If minds are taking heed.

Where are those who felt secure in their remoteness?

And many a safety is wholly apprehension.

You harbored a resolve to pursue them,

And fate sped on, racing your sword.

    As though its calamities feared

The surge of your pardon when you have power.

So a raging calamity came upon them, striking blindly,

Like death, sparing nothing and leaving nothing.

    كُلُّ لَعَمرُكَ صارِمٌ ذَكَرُ

    It rends, while your bright blades lie sheathed;

Each, by your life, a keen, hard-steeled sword.

What can they do, when its slender spears have

Length, while their lifespans have brevity?

Ask Jilliq about them and what it did

To them; with Juhaynah lies the news.

And one cast far from it, for whom is shed

In every quarter blood that goes unavenged.

The lands fling him about, accustomed

To no trail being tracked behind them.

Did you settle there as a neighbor, only to leave it

In flight? Wretched indeed the coming and the going!

And, to your misfortune, you withdrew from men

Whose fortune ruined you, though they did not know.

    وَعاقَلتَ عَهدَهُمُ فَما غَدَروا

    You did indeed ask them, and they were not stingy;

And you entered their covenant; they did not betray it.

And, if you boast of your house, they built for it

A height that leaves the gaze exhausted short of it.

He wrested their strongholds from kings—

A lion, with victory leading his quest.

He laid his breast upon al-Shahba,

And at every mountain pass he has a victory.

He rose above the stars, so his envier thought

That heaven was descending toward him.

Through him the world grew pure, though it had never been known

Except with benefit and harm within it.

His reign cleared away the grit of days,

And every other clarity is marred by cloudiness.

His taming of its vicissitudes bore witness:

Time truly stands in need of him.

It is as though his gifts had sworn

That no wish should elude a hopeful man.

How strange a deluded man, when there have appeared

For your swords the signs and warnings!

And one who offers his throat to your spears,

After the frontier strongholds have suffered through them!

Hope made sport of the excess of his pride,

And thoughts trifled with his absent reason.

And some far goals have before them a span

The like of which no lifetime can sustain.

And when the stars deliberate, neither

Arrow nor bow nor bowstring avails.

    A passing lapse deceived Uqayl,

For which Time sobers up and apologizes.

Perfection feared for your eminence because of it,

And perfection is what the moon fears.

Do not neglect it, for they

Know which horsemen they have bereaved.

O son of those whose generosity made

Mudar boast—and what can tell you what Mudar is?

Your descent from them suffices you as support—

A theme made brief for the panegyrists.

How slight my verse, now that there have come before

My praise to you other means of approach!

Leave aside the far-traveling rhymes, even if

They were stars: one would say they should hide themselves.

For so often your hands have overflowed upon

People who composed neither verse nor prose.

No foot would have held me back behind them,

Had there been consideration of me and of them.

But it is a fate I have accepted,

Under compulsion—and how can one contend with fate?

Between me and good fortune lies a dark night,

Blind, with neither star nor dawn.

No one finds his way in it, even were there to rise

From its horizon your radiant virtues.

    And I see the generous—excepting you—yet

With them I have neither shade nor fruit.

Were I to rouse, to meet some need,

Amr, Umar would die of slumber.
