رَمىhe struck at الدَّهرُTime دونيin my defense وَهوَthough it is جَمٌّabundant صُروفُهُits vicissitudes
رَمى الدَّهرُ دوني وَهوَ جَمٌّ صُروفُهُ
وَكَلَّفَنيand burdened me ماwhat لاnot يَقومُsuffices بِهِfor it شُكريmy gratitude
وَكَلَّفَني ما لا يَقومُ بِهِ شُكري
He struck at Time in my defense, though its vicissitudes are many,
Fortune threw me down while its ways were violent
and burdened me with what my gratitude cannot repay.
And burdened me with more than I could thankfully bear
فَإِنso if شُغِلَتis occupied نَفسيmy soul بِغَيرِwith something other than مَديحِهِpraising him
فَإِن شُغِلَت نَفسي بِغَيرِ مَديحِهِ
فَعدتُthen I would return إِلىto ماwhat كُنتُI was فيهِin it مَعَwith الدَّهرِTime
فَعدتُ إِلى ما كُنتُ فيهِ مَعَ الدَّهرِ
So if my soul is occupied with anything but praising him,
If I busy my soul with aught but praising it
then I would return to the state I was in with Time.
I return to what I was with Fortune overlong
