خيالُكِyour image لاnot يَبْلَىfades وشخُصُكِand your body بالِdecayed
ومِثْليَand one like me مَنْone who لاnot يَلْتَهِيfinds diversion بِمثَالِin a likeness
Your image does not fade, though your body has decayed.
Your imagination never fades, and your personality is sublime
And one like me finds no diversion in a likeness.
And I'm like one with no limits to my ideals
وإِنand though كنتِyou are فيin جَنَّاتِgardens عَدْنٍEden فَرُبَّمَاthen perhaps
حَزِنْتِyou would grieve لبُعْدِيat my absence لوif علمتِyou knew بحاليof my plight
And though you are in the gardens of Eden, perhaps
And if you're in the gardens of Eden, you may
you would grieve at my absence, if you knew my plight.
Sometimes grieve for my distance, if you knew my state
علىagainst الرَّغمthe will منِّيof mine ذاthis السُّلُوُّforgetting وإِنهاand indeed she
علىagainst رَغْمِهاher will أَلاَّnot to تُجيبَshe answers سُؤَاليmy question
This forgetting is against my will; and she,
Despite my foolishness and her
against her will, gives no answer to my question.
Despite her, not answering my question
سكوتُكyour silence عنfrom رَدِّreturning الجوابthe answer تعمُّداًdeliberately
لعيِّfrom inarticulacy لسانٍof a tongue أَمor لَفَرْطِfrom an excess of دَلاَلِcoyness
Your deliberate silence, giving no reply—
Your silence in responding intentionally
is it from a faltering tongue, or from excessive coyness?
Is it from a mute tongue or excessive infatuation?
لعمريby my life أَمَّاas for عُمْرُهَاher lifetime ماnot وَفَىkept faith لَهاwith her
وأَمَّاand as for لِسانيmy tongue بَعْدَهاafter her فَوفَىso it kept faith ليwith me
By my life, her lifetime did not keep faith with her;
By my life, as for her life, it did not fulfill her
and my tongue, after her passing, has kept faith with me.
And as for my tongue after her, it fulfilled me
