Time scattered the necklace of my beloved's mouth,
Time has scattered the pearls of my beloved's lips,
so my tears over him mirror its scattering.
And so my tears tell of their dispersal.

Each tooth had been like a chrysanthemum,
Each tooth was like a fresh jujube,
then, bloodied, became like a pomegranate blossom.
Turned by blood to ruby coral.

He was in the thick of the encounter, and was not
We met in the nook of his embrace, and he
far off among the spectators.
Was not far in that throng of onlookers.

أَوor أَرَانَاshowed us مَلاحةًbeauty وشَطَارَهْand daring
That beauty of his did not suffice him,
That coquetry of his did not restrain him,
or he showed us beauty and daring.
Nor did he show us coquetry or haughtiness.

So the stones came to him out of love and visited
The stones came to him out of love; I visited him,
him—so no welcome to that visit!
But no welcome to that visit!

And it was as though the stones grew jealous of
It was as if the stones were jealous
humankind, and so launched a raid on his front teeth.
Of people, so they showered his cheeks with blows.

How my soul grieves for the sweetness of a mouth
My soul yearns for the sweetness of those lips
that afterward tasted the harshest bitterness!
That tasted, after it, but bitterest myrrh.

How can the heart forget the memory of a beloved
How can my heart be consoled, remembering a beloved
for whom even the stones envied me?
For whom even stones envied me!
