قالواthey said مُحِبَّكyour lover ياO حبيبُbeloved صَبَرْhe became patient
ماnot عِنْدَwith قائِلِthe speaker of ذاthis الكلامِspeech خبَرْknowledge
They said, 'Your lover, O beloved, has become patient.'
They said, your lover endured patiently,
The speaker of these words knows nothing.
The one saying this knew not what he spoke,
لماwhen أَرادhe intended بأَنto يقولَsay صبَاhe fell in love
عثَرstumbled اللَّسانُthe tongue بِهِover it فقالَso he said صَبَرْhe became patient
When he meant to say, 'He fell in love,'
When he meant to say passion, his tongue tripped
his tongue stumbled over it, so he said, 'He became patient.'
And uttered 'patience' instead in its place.
ونَعَمْand yes صَبَوْتُI fell in love إِليهwith him حينwhen وَفَىhe was faithful
ونعمْand yes صبرتُI endured عليهwith him حِينَwhen غَدَرْhe betrayed
And yes, I fell for him when he was faithful,
And yes, I poured passion forth when he was true,
and yes, I endured him when he was treacherous.
And yes, I was patient when he betrayed.
ولقدand indeed أَتىcame للصَّبِّto the lovesick lover عاذِلُهُhis reproacher
فنهَىso he forbade ولكنَّbut الغَرَامpassion أَمَرْcommanded
And indeed, the reproacher came to the lovesick lover;
The critic of passion came to admonish,
he forbade, but passion commanded.
But love insisted though he forbade.
مُرْcommand! ياO عذولُreproacher وَمَنْand someone سِوَايَother than me بِذَاto do this
فأَنَاfor I وأَنْتَand you كناظِرٍlike an eye وسَهَرْand sleeplessness
Give that command, O reproacher, to someone other than me,
Pass by, O critic, and let all others be,
for I and you are like an eye and sleeplessness.
For I and you are but vigils and wakefulness.
لاdo not تقْرأَنْrecite لعذولto a reproacher سَوْرَتِهِhis outburst
فلقدfor indeed قرأَتَyou have read منfrom الخلافِdissent سُوَرْchapters
Do not recite a reproacher's outburst to him;
Read not the critic his homily,
for you have read chapters of dissent.
For you have read the verses of difference.
ويقولُand he says دَمْعُكَyour tears لمdid not يَدَعْleave بصراًsight
أَسَمِعْتَhave you heard? قَطُّever لعاشِقِof a lover بِبَصَرْwith sight
And he says, 'Your tears have left no sight.'
Your tears, they say, left no vision untouched,
Have you ever heard of a lover with sight?
Did you ever hear a lover had sight?
بأَبيwith my father as ransom وأُمِّيand my mother منthe one who أَسَرَّrejoiced إِذاwhen
قالواthey said غزاهُassailed him غزالُهhis gazelle فأَسَرْso captured him
My father and mother be ransom for the one who rejoiced when
By my parents, when they say he was captivated,
they said, 'His gazelle assailed him and took him captive.'
It means his gazelle took him captive.
قمرَwon at gambling الفؤادَthe heart وجدَّand was earnest فيin لَعِبٍplay
ياO صِدْقَthe truthfulness of منthe one who قالsaid المليحُthe lovely one قَمَرْa moon
He won the heart in a gamble, and played in earnest;
The moon of my heart found joy in playing,
how true the one who said, 'The lovely one is a moon!'
How true said the beautiful one, 'the moon.'
أَبليتَyou wore away جِسْمِيmy body ياO مليحُlovely one ضنىًwasting sickness
فالجِسْمُfor the body كِتَّانٌlinen وأَنتَand you قَمَرْa moon
You have wasted my body, O lovely one, with lovesickness;
You exhausted my body, O beautiful one,
for the body is linen, and you are the moon.
While the body is but flax and you the moon.
لماwhen بكيتُI wept ضحكْتَyou laughed منfrom طَرَبٍdelight
فنظمتَso you strung together ماwhat كانhad المُحِبُّthe lover نَثَرْscattered
When I wept, you laughed with delight;
When I cried you laughed in rapture,
so you strung together what the lover had scattered.
And composed verses from what the lover scattered.
يَاO سَافِكاًshedder of دَمْعِيmy tears وناهِيَهand one who forbids them
حَسْبيenough for me وحسبُكَand enough for you قدalready أَخذْتَyou have taken فَذَرْso let be
O you who shed my tears and forbid them,
O you who poured forth my tears but forbade them,
enough for me and you! You have taken—now let be.
Enough for me and you - you took, so leave off.
قُبِّحْتَmay you be made ugly ياO حُسْنَbeauty of الحبيبthe beloved فَقَدfor indeed
أَضْحَىhas become دَميmy blood مثلlike الدُّمُوعِtears هَدَرْshed in vain
May you be made ugly, O beloved's beauty, for
Evil you are, O beauty of the beloved,
my blood, like my tears, has come to be shed in vain.
For my blood is spilt like pouring tears.
فرميْتَنِيso you pelted me منfrom تيهِهِhis pride بِنَوىًwith separation
ورجمْتَنيand you stoned me منfrom قلبِهhis heart بَحَجَرْwith a stone
So, out of his pride, you pelted me with separation's pits,
You cast me from his loss in purpose,
and stoned me with a stone from his heart.
And stoned me from his heart with rocks.
عانقتُهI embraced him سَحَراًbefore dawn وغبتُand I swooned هَوىًfrom love
فكأَنَّهُso, as though he لِيَfor me بالعِنَاقِwith the embrace سَحَرْbewitched
I embraced him before dawn and swooned with love,
I embraced him at dawn and vanished in passion,
as though he had bewitched me with that embrace.
As if to him my embrace was but sorcery.
ولثمتُand I kissed تَحْتَbeneath العَيْنِthe eye منfrom شَغَفِيmy passion
بالعينfor the eye أَوor صَيَّرْتُI made فيهon him أَثَرa mark
And I kissed beneath the eye, out of my passion
And I kissed beneath his eyes in my fervor -
for the eye—or left a mark upon him.
His eyes - or did I make a mark therein?
ومَدَامِعِيand my tears منfrom فوقِabove وجْنَتِهِhis cheek
أَوor مَاnot سَمِعْتَyou have heard بجنةٍof a garden ونَهَرand a river
And my tears flowed over his cheek—
And my tears flowed above his cheeks -
or have you not heard of a garden and a river?
As if a stream from the Garden I made appear.
وشَفَعْتُand I interceded للغِزْلانfor the gazelles إِذwhen حَضَرَتْthey came
واستَوْهَبَتْand they sought as a gift منfrom ناظريهhis two eyes حَوَرْdark-eyed beauty
And I interceded for the gazelles when they came
I interceded for the gazelles when they came,
and they begged his two eyes for a gift of dark-eyed beauty.
Seeking a Houri as gift from his eyes.
ولَقَدْand indeed بَداhe appeared لِلْبَدْرِbefore the full moon مُعْتَرِضاًchallenging it
فالبدرُso the full moon أَغْضَىlowered its gaze والمحبُّand the lover نَظَرْlooked
And indeed, he appeared to challenge the full moon;
The full moon paled seeing him so fair,
so the full moon lowered its gaze, while the lover looked.
While the lover but gazed in delight.
والشَّمْسُand the sun حمرةُthe redness of خدِّهاher cheek خَجَلاًfrom shame
منْهُbecause of him وتَزْعُمُand she claims أَنَّthat ذَاكَthat خَفَرْmodesty
And the sun's cheek is red with shame
The red sun shied in shame of his cheek,
because of him, though she claims it is modesty.
Claiming that was but his guard's blushing.
وتستَّرتand she hid herself بالغَرْبِin the west حينَwhen بَدَاhe appeared
وتَنَقَّبَتْand she veiled herself بالغَيْمِwith clouds حينَwhen سَفَرْhe unveiled his face
And she hid in the west when he appeared,
She veiled herself in the west when he appeared,
and veiled herself with clouds when he unveiled his face.
And wrapped herself in clouds when he traveled.
واهاًah! لغصنٍfor a bough زَهْرُهits blossom أَبداًalways
صبحٌdawn وليلand night وغرّةٌand a radiant brow وشَعَرْand hair
Ah, for a bough whose blossom is forever
Alas for the branch whose blossom is ever
dawn and night—a radiant brow and hair.
Morn and night and bud and hair.
صُبْحٌdawn وليلٌand night ظلَّremained بينهماbetween them
ياO للملاحةِwhat beauty! طُرَّةa forelock كَسَحَرْlike predawn twilight
Dawn and night—between them lingered
Morn and night that lingered between them -
a forelock—what beauty!—like the hour before dawn.
O the witty one is like sorcery indeed!
شَعْرٌhair كليلةِlike a night of وصْلِunion صاحبهits owner
حُسْناًin beauty ولكنbut ليْسَthere is not فيهin it قِصَرْshortness
Hair like a night of union with its owner
Hair like the night of union with the beloved -
in beauty, but without its brevity.
Beautiful, but lacking a palace.
والمُشْطُand the comb يَشْكُوcomplains فيهthrough it طولَthe length of سُرىًnight-travel
وكذاكَand likewise يشكوcomplains منهfrom it بُعْدَthe distance of سَفَرْtravel
And the comb complains of long night-travel through it,
The comb complains of the length of his tresses,
and likewise complains of the distance of its journey through it.
And also complains of his journey far.
ياO آيةًa sign لِلَّيلِof the night ماnot مُحِيَتْwas effaced
للخَلْقِfor people فيكِin you وللعُقُودِand for necklaces سَمَرْnightly conversation
O sign of night that has not been effaced,
O wonder for the night that was brought to be
people and necklaces have their nightly converse in you.
For creation in you, and for knotting of pearls.
للهِfor God عصْرٌa time كالرّبيعِlike spring مَضَىpassed
والرَّبْعُand the abode رَوْضٌa garden والمِلاَحُand the beauties زَهَرْflowers
How wondrous, by God, that bygone, springlike time,
By Allah, an evening like springtime that passed,
when the abode was a garden and the beauties flowers,
And spring is but a garden, and beauty, flowers.
والدّهرُand time قُرْبٌcloseness ليسthere is not فيهin it نَوىًseparation
والعيشُand life صَفْوٌclarity ليسthere is not فيهin it كَدَرْcloudiness
and time was closeness, with no separation in it,
Time is near with no malice within it,
and life was clear, with no cloudiness in it.
And living pleasant with no bitterness.
أَيامَthe days when عِقدُthe necklace of اللَّهْوِpleasure منتظمٌstrung in order
فاليومُso the day سلكٌa thread والكئوسand the cups دُرَرْpearls
In the days when pleasure's necklace was strung in order,
Days when the necklace of joy is threaded,
each day was a thread, and the cups were pearls.
So the day is a string and cups but pearls.
وكتابُand the writ of جُودِكَyour generosity بالوصالin union وماand not
فيهin it لديوانfor the office of الصُّدُودِrejection نَظَرْjurisdiction
And your generosity's writ was for union, with no
The book of your generosity in union - not an instance
authority over it for the office of rejection.
Of the poetry of separation in it appears.
وذكرتُهand I recalled it والكأْسُand the cup فوقَabove يَدِيmy hand
فشَرِبْتُso I drank للذكرىin remembrance بوصلكto union with you شرevil (unclear in context)
And I recalled it, with the cup upon my hand,
I recalled him while the wine cup was in my hand,
so I drank in remembrance, to union with you—[unclear ending: 'evil'].
So I drank to your union with that memory.
