قدindeed عجزproved unable المملوكُthe servant عنto خِدْمةٍa service
قد عجز المملوكُ عن خِدْمةٍ
ثباتُهhis persistence فيin مثلِهاits like طيشُfolly
ثباتُه في مثلِها طيشُ
The servant has proved unequal to a service;
The slave has failed at his service
His persistence in such service is folly.
His determination in the like of it is folly
للجيشfor the army ديوانٌa bureau وماليand I have no بهwith it
للجيش ديوانٌ ومالي به
أُنسٌcomfort ولاnor عنديI have لهfor it عيشُa livelihood
أُنسٌ ولا عندي له عيشُ
The army has a bureau, and with it I have no
The army has provisions, and I have nothing of it
Comfort, nor any livelihood from it.
Company, yet I have no livelihood from it
وصرتُand I became مهزوماًdefeated فلاso do not تعجبواmarvel
وصرتُ مهزوماً فلا تعجبوا
منat واحدٍa single man يهزمُهdefeats him الجيشُthe army
من واحدٍ يهزمُه الجيشُ
And I am now defeated, so do not marvel
So I have become defeated, be not amazed
At a single man whom the army defeats.
That one is defeated by an army
