The mustache of the one I love has grayed, so I may—

nay, I must—be enslaved by love.

    والآن فرَّ من المَشيبِ إِلى حِمَى

    He had always been prey to the glances of humankind;

and now he has fled from graying into a sanctuary.

They thought his beauty had withered, so all of them,

except me, have become blind and mute.

Whoever was bewitched by the night of his cheek-down—

would he turn away from him when he has brought forth stars?

He has not grayed from old age; rather, his gray hair

comes from the rosewater of saliva, with the musk of dusky lips.

My gray hair and my tormentor's gray hair are not alike:

that comes from drinking one's fill, and this from thirst.
