The full moon of that gathering has become a crescent

through sickness—who will let me be his redeemer?

His charms grew exquisite and, in their delicacy, nearly

hid from us the visible signs of his wasting.

And his body fell ill, after his waist and his

glances, his lovers, and his tryst.

And it was as though his fever, so fierce its blaze,

had cast upon him the heat of livers.

When he blazed, I was proved right in naming him

and calling him the blazing star.

O you who unite me with my waywardness,

and part me from my sound judgment:

    فحكيتَ صبري أَو حكيتَ رُقادي

    When you grew thin, you mirrored some of my traits;

so you mirrored my patience, or mirrored my sleep.

Were it not for the tale-bearers around you, I would have come to visit you,

but visitors of my own kept me away from you.

So you sent my heart to visit, and many a time

hearts have discharged the duties of bodies.

And were he to dwell in heaven, so lovely is he,

the stars would come to him with those visiting the sick.
