Yet my yearning has no path in love.

Do you favor me with distance and desertion, O my destroyer,

when your love is what I seek among humankind?

Who, then, among humankind will intercede for me with my master?

The anemones are ascribed to the Nuʿmān of his cheeks.

    لها من تَغازِيرِ الغَرامِ مُرَتَّبُ

    I devoted my eye to him, streaming tears;

it has a fixed stipend from love's copious outpourings.

He has an upright, bough-like figure that has tyrannized the heart.

Apart from what you see, is there no accord to entice?

And a cheek that gloats over my slaying in love,

and I have a proof, deemed sound in matters of meaning.

And when his glance guarded his cool saliva,

the fire of my yearning for him began to blaze.

And beauty's water became a delight when its time came,

and his polished speech delighted the ear.

A gazelle with kohl-dark eyes, perfect in beauty,

but when it comes to evasion, he is a fox.

And since his lovers beheld the army of his beauty,

they seek war with the reproaching women for love of him.

His gaze runs riot in drunkenness and turns

upon his lovers, O friend, striking with its edge.

And how often I said, when an eye of his let fly:

"Behold, it is a tried-and-tested gateway to magic!"

    And many a night passed at the meeting-place of his companionship;

in it, my tongue indeed came forth, singing of love.

I fulfilled love's obligations toward him, and I do not see

anyone but me among humankind ever summoned to it.
