O you who are harsh in your speech,

Nay, you who are unjust in your judgment:

You wronged your servant over his reproach,

Open and hidden, in your censure of him.

You assigned all the blame to his deed,

Unjustly, and all the excuses to his adversary.

Thus you added resentment to his resentment

Against him—nay, sorrow to his sorrow.

May he be spared your injustice for his reproach

Against you—nay, may you be spared his injustice.

Do not marvel at Time for its injustice:

For it has only followed its accustomed course.
