ياO منthe one whom نسيتُI have forgotten فسُكْرُهfor his intoxication منfrom لحظهhis glance
أَلمthe pain الجراحِthe wounds بهthrough him فقلبيso my heart ذاهلُdazed
O you, I have forgotten—for your glance brings intoxication—
O you whom I forgot, yet the pain of wounds by you still bewilders my heart
the pain of wounds through you; so my heart is dazed.
How strange is the narcissus in the garden! Is it a date palm or vines from Babylon?
واعجباًand oh, what wonder! منat نرجسa narcissus فيin روضةa garden
أَمor حلَّsettled فيهاin it نابلٌan archer أَمor بابلBabylon
And how wondrous—a narcissus in a garden!
They said your excuse reveals my torment, but I replied: Never! It is only a question
Or has an archer settled there, or Babylon?
Does your cheek wear a garment of silk? Or does the anemone trail locks upon it?
قالُواthey said عِذارُكyour cheek-down مُخْبِرan informant عنabout لوعتيmy anguish
فأَجبتهمso I answered them هيهاتfar from it بلrather هوit سائلa questioner
They said your cheek-down tells of my anguish.
I stay awake for it when I see it bearing the burden of its excuse upon it
So I answered them: 'Far from it! Rather, it is a questioner.'
أَمor هلis/does ...? لخدِّكfor your cheek ملبسٌa garment منof سُندسfine silk

Or does your cheek have a garment of fine silk?
Or are there light tunics of anemones upon it?
ولقدand indeed أَرِقُّI feel pity لهfor it إِذاwhen شاهدتهI see it
وعليهand upon it أُسّthe base عذَارِهhis cheek-down مُتَحامِلbearing heavily
And indeed I pity it when I see it,
with the base of his cheek-down bearing heavily upon it.
