O night that passed so sweetly for us!
O night that passed so sweetly for us
The sheikh Abu Murrah adorned it
Adorned by Sheikh Abou Murrah
بالغُصنwith the bough بالبدرwith the full moon بشمسwith the sun الضُّحىmidmorning
بالرِّيمwith the gazelle بالدُّريwith the radiant star بالدُّرهwith the pearl
with the bough, the full moon, the midmorning sun,
With branches, with the full moon, with morning’s sun
with the gazelle, the radiant star, the pearl,
With sandgrouse, with pearls, with seeds of pearl
بالثَّملِwith the languid الطرفgaze بمنwith one who ريقُهhis saliva
أَسْكَرmore intoxicating حتىuntil أَسكرmade drunk الخَمَرهْthe wine
with the languid-eyed one, whose saliva
With languid eyes, with one whose saliva
was so intoxicating that it made wine itself drunk.
Intoxicated until the wine itself was drunk
زارَhe visited علىin خوفٍfear وفيand in سُترةٍconcealment
حتَّىuntil رأَيناwe saw وجْهَهُhis face جَهْرهopenly
He visited in fear and under cover,
He came furtively, concealed
until we saw his face openly.
Until we saw his face openly
وافىhe arrived إِلىto عِنْدِيmy place علىwith حاجةٍa need
وجاءَنيand came to me فيin ساعةِan hour of العُسْرَهhardship
He arrived at my place with a need,
He came to me for a purpose
and came to me in an hour of hardship.
In my darkest hour of need
فكمand how many نَظَمْنَاwe strung فوقهupon him قُبْلةًa kiss
وكمand how many نَثَرْنَاwe scattered فَوْقَهover him بَدْرَهa money-purse
And how many kisses we strung upon him,
How many kisses we planted on him!
and how many purses of money we scattered over him!
How many full moons we scattered over him!
فتحتI opened بابthe door of الصَّدرِthe breast حبّاًout of love لهfor him
وطرَّقتْand bowed منِّيfrom me لهto him النُّعْرْpride (uncertain reading)
I opened the door of my breast out of love for him,
I opened my heart’s door in love for him
and my pride bowed to him [wording uncertain].
And from me wafted to him soft sighs
ولمand not يزلceased وجهيmy face علىupon وجههhis face
منfrom أَوَّلthe beginning of اللَّيلِthe night إِلىuntil بُكْرهmorning
And my face remained upon his face
My face was never separate from his face
from the beginning of the night until morning,
From early night until dawn
فيin سُكْرةٍintoxication تتبعهاfollows it صَحْوةsobriety
وصحوةٍand sobriety تتبعُهاfollows it سَكْرَهintoxication
in an intoxication followed by sobriety,
In drunkenness followed by wakefulness
and a sobriety followed by intoxication.
And wakefulness followed by drunkenness
أُصفِّفُI arrange in rows اللَّثمthe kisses ولكنَّنيand yet I
أُبَلْبِلُI tousle الصُّدْغَينthe two temple-locks والطُّرَّهand the forelock
I arrange the kisses in rows, yet I
I arrange my veil but still
tousle his two temple-locks and his forelock.
I spill his cheekbones, his curls
مرأَىًa sight ومَرْعىًand a pasture ليَfor me فيin وجْههِhis face
أَماhave you not رأَيتَyou saw الماءَthe water والخُضْرَهand the greenery
In his face I have a sight and a pasture:
Before me, his face is water and greenery
have you not seen the water and the greenery?
Haven’t you seen water and greenery?
للهGod be praised ماhow أَكْسلَlanguid أَجْفانَهhis eyelids
وعندand at قتلِkilling النَّاسِpeople ماhow أَفْرَهdeft
God be praised—how languid his eyelids are,
His eyelids did not tire
yet how deft he is at killing people!
As if keeping vigil for pay
وبزَّنيand robbed me of عقْليmy reason أَلْتفِتI turn to look
واسْتَلَبَand seized القلْبَthe heart فَلَمand not أَكْرهI resent
He robbed me of my reason—I turn to look;
I did not fall short of attaining what I sought
and stole my heart, yet I did not resent it.
For I was not forced against my will
فَمِنso of فُؤَاديmy heart لَمْnot يَدَعhe left حبَّةًa grain
ومنand of رقاديmy sleep لمnot يَذَرْhe left ذَرّهa speck
So he left not one grain of my heart,
My heart grew drunk with love for him
and not one speck of my sleep.
And in his head the potshards broke
ولمand not ينمslept طَرفيmy eye فيin لَيْلَتيmy night
كأَنَّهas though it يَسْهَرُstays awake بالأُجْرهfor pay
And my eye did not sleep that night,
I became a fervent, enamored youth
as though it were paid to keep vigil.
Not every youth is from the clan of excuse!
ولمand not أَقصِّرْI slackened دونَbefore نَيْلِattaining المنىthe wishes
لأَنَّنيbecause I مَاnot كُنْتُI was فيin سُخْرَهforced labor
And I did not stop short of attaining my wishes,
O people of censure, a man
for I was not doing forced labor.
Is not assembled from anything but this clay
قدindeed سكرgrew drunk القلبُthe heart بِعشْقيwith my love لَهُfor him
وانكَسَرَتand shattered فيon رَأْسِهits head الجرَّهthe jar
My heart grew drunk with my love for him,
You disparage the likes of me and blame me
and the jar shattered on its head.
By God, you have not been honorable
وصِرتُand I became صبّاًa passionate lover كَلِفاًinfatuated مُدْنَفاًwasted by illness
ماnot كلُّevery صبٍّlover مِنْof بَنيthe sons of عُذْرَهUdhrah
And I became a passionate lover, infatuated and wasting away.
Of the night visitors I have no experience
Not every lover is of the Banu Udhrah.
Nor over those who stay away any power
ياO معشرَcompany of اللُّوَّامِthe reproachers إِنِّindeed I امرؤٌa man
لمnot يُجمَعbe joined إِلاَّexcept هذهthis المرَّtime
O company of reproachers, I am a man
The mother of whoever rebukes me is an owl
who has been joined only this once.
And the mother of whoever excuses me is a wild cow
تَهْوَونَyou love مِثْليlike me وتلومونَنيand you reproach me
واللهby God ماnot أَحسَنْتمُyou did well العِشْرَهcompanionship
You love as I do, yet you reproach me.
O night whose conversations were so sweet
By God, you have not been good companions!
When will you come back to me?
ماليَI have no بالسُّلوانof forgetting love منany خِبْرةٍexperience
وَلاَnor عَلَىfor الهِجْرَانِestrangement منany قدْرَهstrength
I have no experience of forgetting love,
Say to him who was absent from my night
nor any strength to endure estrangement.
“How excellent your absence was, O stranger!”
فأُمُّso the mother of مَنwhoever يعذلنيreproaches me قُحْبَةٌa whore
وأُمُّand the mother of منwhoever يعذِرُنيexcuses me حُرَّهa freeborn woman
So the mother of whoever reproaches me is a whore,
And if you fear reproach from him, say to him
and the mother of whoever excuses me is a freeborn woman.
“May God not make the present desolate.”
ياO ليلةnight طَابَتwere sweet أَحَادِيثُهاits conversations
نأَيْتِyou went far away عنِّيfrom me فَمَتَىso when الكَرَّهthe return
O night whose conversations were sweet,
you have gone far from me—when will you return?
فقلso say لمنto whoever قدalready غَابَstayed away عَنْfrom لَيْلتيmy night
تَعَسُّفاًout of obstinacy أَحْسَنْتَyou did well يَاO غِرَّهsimpleton
So tell whoever stayed away from my night
out of obstinacy: Well done, you simpleton!
وإِنand if تخفyou fear مِنْof عَتْبِهِhis reproach قُلْsay لَهto him
لاmay not أَوْحَشَleave bereft اللهGod مِنَof الحَضْرَهَthe presence
And if you fear his reproach, say to him:
May God never leave us bereft of your presence!
