أَياO طربيmy rapture منfrom غُنْيَتيmy all; all I need إِذwhen تَغَنَّتِshe sang
وَياand O حَزَنيmy sorrow منfrom جَنَّتيmy paradise إِذwhen تَجنَّتِshe acted unjustly
O my rapture at my all when she sang!
O my joy from my exultation when you exult
And O my sorrow at my paradise when she wronged me!
And O my sorrow from my paradise when you are sorrowful
تَمنَّىlonged for فؤاديmy heart وَصْلَunion with مَنْthe one who هُوhe قَاتِليmy killer
فماfor … not هوَhe إِلاَّexcept مُنْيَتيmy desire أَوْor مَنِيَّتيmy death
My heart longed for union with the one who is my killer;
My heart desired the union of one who slays me
For he is nothing but my desire—or my death.
Yet it is naught but my demise or my desire
وقَلْناand we said حَكىresembled رِيمَa gazelle الفَلاَthe wilderness فيin نِفَارِهhis flight
فماso what بالُهis the matter with him لمdid not يحكِهِhe resembles it فيin التَّلفُّتِlooking back
And we said he resembled the desert gazelle in his flight;
And we related the tale of the ribs in their separation
Then why did he not resemble it in looking back?
Why then did he not relate it in the turning away?
يُدَافِعُنيhe keeps me away عَنْfrom وصْلهunion with him بتجهُّمٍwith a scowl
فيالَيْتَهُso, if only he لَوْif كَانَwere يَدْفَعُhe repels بالتيwith that which
He keeps me from union with him with a scowl;
He defends against my union with frowning
So, if only he would repel me with that which...
Would that he defend with coming to me!
