O dweller among gardens and rivers,
O dweller among gardens and rivers
may life be sweet to you; because of you I am in the fire.
May life delight you, while I am in fire

And O virtuous one, ever abiding among his forefathers,
Goodness forever descends from his forefathers
with the virtuous, and O pure one among the pure.
Among the virtuous and the pure near the Pure

Tell your father, who has given you his Kawthar to drink,
Introduce your father who quenched you with his Kauthar
that for you I am made to drink my flowing tears.
That through you my flowing tears are quenched

The tears of my eyes are my supporters, and no wonder
Tears of my eyes are my supporters, and no wonder
if I call them the weakest of my helpers and supporters.
If I say I am the weakest of my aides and supporters

Death chose you, gaining
Death chose you while possessing
good fortune—and how much fortune you hold for a chooser!
A share, and how much fate you have as the Chosen

Death is no disgrace; you closed your eyes when it came,
Death is no disgrace when it came
though you have never turned a blind eye to disgrace.
While you still do not cease to disgrace disgrace

You, O full moon, when you departed
your guiding light from us—oh, my longing for the night traveler!
You took your guidance from us, O longing for the departing

You remain a radiant full moon, never eclipsed
You remain a shining full moon not eclipsed
for those finding their way, and a star that never sets.
For the guided, and a star not setting

Oh, the desolation of the house when its master vanished
The house was lonesome when its owner was absent
from it—and by 'the house' I mean my heart.
From it, and my heart is concerned with the house

You infected your phantom with truthfulness, so it has not visited;
You made your apparition truthful, no visitors came with it
so I am granted no phantom of you that visits often.
So I have no apparition of yours as visitors

If you knew the details of my news
in sorrow, my news would grieve you in Paradise.
In grief, my condition in Paradise would sadden you

And my heart is your neighbor; safeguard its sanctity,
In your vicinity, my heart is holy, so respect it
for I have known you to safeguard a neighbor's sanctity.
I knew you respect the sanctity of a neighbor

Without your pleasure, how can I endure
Or in any loss but losing you, what patience I have!
Or without missing you, how can I be patient

And how can I find patience without you, or fortitude,
How can I show patience or composure from you
when I have seen you laid among stones?
When I saw you lying among rocks

And the grave you have entered is no ordinary grave;
Unlike a grave where you rested
it is only a niche for lights.
It is but a lantern for lights

Clouds of holiness and divine favor rain upon it,
Clouds of holiness and pleasures rain upon it
so let no heavens claim their rains as a favor.
So no skies rain with showers

The noble one has passed, leaving of his virtues
The noble passed away, leaving behind from his virtues
gardens filled with lights and blossoms.
Gardens of lights and flowers

His renown has traversed the earth, and the days spread it abroad,
A mention that spanned the earth, and days spread it
so you always see it bound to journeys.
So it always appears held by journeys

He remained righteous, his speech free of folly,
He was always righteous, correct in speech, not deviant
ever speaking of noble deeds, ever standing in prayer before dawn.
A speaker of remarkable utterances, vigil of dawns

His prayer-place and his mosque wept for him;
His mosque and its worshipers cried for him
so the lamps are nothing but a fire of remembrance.
So the lamps are but fire of remembrance

And he fasted from all that was forbidden, so he had
He fasted from all prohibitions, so for him
in eternity, beside his father, a feast of fast-breaking.
In eternity, with his Father, is the feast of breakfast

He never heeded the days when they turned in his favor,
He never cared for days to come
and cared nothing for scarcity or abundance.
Nor did he care for scarcity and abundance
أَتْقَىthe most God-fearing الأَنامِmankind جميعاًall عندduring خَلْوَتِهhis solitude

وأَسمحُand the most generous الخلقpeople يوماًon a day عندduring إِعسَارِpoverty
He was the most God-fearing of all mankind when alone,
Among people, he was most pious in his solitude
and the most generous of people on a day of poverty.
And most generous on days of poverty
آثرتُI preferred دَهْرِيَmy time أَنthat يَبقَىhe remain بِهin it أَبداًforever

I wished him to remain in my time forever,
I wished my life to remain with him forever
but my time's preference was different from mine.
So my life's wish was not my wish

My eyes lament him with their scattered tears,
My eyes cry for him with tears pouring forth
as my tongue mourns him through my poems.
As my tongue cries for him with poetry
ياO دَهْرُTime تأْكُلyou devour أَحبَابِيmy loved ones وتَفْرِسُهمand tear them apart

ماnot أَنتyou ياO دهرُTime إِلاَّexcept ضيغمٌa lion ضارِيravening
O Time, you devour my loved ones and tear them apart;
O time you consume my loved ones and ambush them
you are, O Time, nothing but a ravening lion.
You are nothing but a inflicting fate
فياso oh افتقارِيmy poverty إِذاwhen أَفنيتَyou exhaust مُدَّخَرِيmy stored treasure

So, oh, my poverty, when you exhaust my stored treasure,
So my poverty when you eradicate my possessions
and oh, how lost I am when you hide my moons!
And my misguidance when you eclipse my moons
لمdid not أَرجُI hope for شيئاًanything منfrom الدنياthe world فتعكسُهso you overturn it

I have hoped for nothing from this world for you to overturn;
I do not expect anything in life to reflect it
and how can faithfulness be expected from a traitor?
And how to expect loyalty from a betrayer?
منwhoever يعرِفِknows الدَّهرTime مثليas I do يَغْدُbecomes مستوياًequal
فيin سمعِهhis hearing صوتُthe voice نَعَّاءٍa death-crier ونعَّارand a loud shouter
Whoever knows Time as I do comes to find alike
Who knows time like me becomes balanced
in his hearing the voice of a death-crier and that of a shouter.
Hearing the voice of a wailing female mourner
والمرءُand a person بالدَّهرby Time لاnot ينفكceases مُنْكسِراًbroken

And man, through Time, never ceases to be broken,
Man can never escape from time broken
by force—and the breaking of earthenware is no surprise.
Subjugated and not strange is the breaking of pottery
فيin كلِّevery يومٍday لآلِfor the family of المصطفىthe Chosen One مِحَنٌordeals

Each day, the family of the Chosen One faces ordeals
Each day the Family of the Chosen faces tribulations
that bring religion only the rending of its veils.
That bring no benefit to the religion but rending veils
فَآلso the family of أَحمدَAhmad مَصروعُونslain فيin حُفَرٍpits

So Ahmad's family lie slain in pits,
The Family of Ahmad are fallen in graves
and banished in distant lands and cities.
And exiled to horizons and lands
قدindeed أَدركَhas exacted الثأْرَvengeance منهُمfrom them مَنwhoever يُعَاندهمopposes them

Those who oppose them have exacted vengeance upon them,
Whoever opposes them has avenged
through oppression, while mankind sleeps, heedless of vengeance.
With enmity, while people sleep from avenging

People were bewildered, and bewildered in their bewilderment;
People were confused in their confusion
mankind's bewilderment is nothing but the Creator's wisdom.
No confusion of people but wisdom of the Creator

And most people, after reflection, are found
Most people end up hesitating
wavering between denial and acknowledgment.
Between denial and affirmation
ياO ابنَson النبيِّthe Prophet عسىmay it be فيat البعثthe resurrection تَبعَثُyou send لِيto me

O son of the Prophet, may you at the Resurrection send me
O son of the Prophet, hopefully in Resurrection you will ransom me
from your grandfather a release for me from the Fire.
From your grandfather, freeing me from the Fire

For if I meet you on the Day of Gathering too occupied
For if I meet you on Day of Gathering busy
to heed me, then my sins will have doomed me there.
From me, then my burdens have destroyed me
