لا غَرْو لما غابَ شمسُ الضَّحى
أَنْthat أَطلعَbrought forth الجفنَthe eyelid دُمُعِيmy tears نجومْstars
أَنْ أَطلعَ الجفنَ دُمُعِي نجومْ
No wonder, when the midmorning sun set,
No wonder my eyes' tears became stars
that the eyelid brought forth my tears as stars.
When the sun of morning disappeared.
غلِطْتُI was mistaken ماnot الدمْعُthe tears نجومٌstars بهin it
غلِطْتُ ما الدمْعُ نجومٌ به
لكنَّهbut it is درُّpearls بِحارِseas of الهمومْsorrows
لكنَّه درُّ بِحارِ الهمومْ
I was mistaken: the tears in it are not stars,
I was wrong, the tears are not stars
but pearls of the seas of sorrow.
Rather, they are pearls in an ocean of worries.
